Free Shipping Is Not Always the Lowest Total

Shipping is only one line in the transaction. Compare what leaves your wallet from start to finish.

Calculate delivered cost

Add merchandise, shipping, required memberships, service charges, and likely return expenses. Compare identical models and seller conditions. A higher item price with “free” delivery may still exceed a competitor’s lower price plus shipping.

Watch the threshold

Adding an unwanted item to reach free shipping is still spending. Compare the add-on cost with the shipping charge and consider waiting until you have another planned purchase.

Include pickup costs

Store pickup may save shipping but requires time and transportation. Combine errands when practical rather than treating pickup as automatically free.

Consider returns

A retailer with free outbound shipping may deduct return postage or charge a restocking fee. Return convenience has real value for products with uncertain fit or quality.

Sniffer rule: Optimize the complete delivered-and-returnable transaction, not the word “free.”
